Halloween is looking to come back in full force this year, so there's no real reason you shouldn't dress up, even if it's only to parade your costume around the apartment and pop off a celebratory fit pic for the 'gram. Chances are, if you're really about that menswear life, you've recently taken to dressing up in one way or another regardless. And what are the clothes we wear, if not a costume, to shelter us from the everyday indignities of this cruel, cruel world?
Listen, man, even if you don't have the energy to DIY your way to an award-winning costume this year, that's no excuse to phone it in. (Thoroughly exhausted by the events of the past year? Now that's an excuse!) Because all really it takes to nail a decent Halloween look is a little bit of pop-culture savvy and a few fall wardrobe essentials—and maybe a willingness to wear something other than sweatpants for once.
If you've never been the type to go all-out when it comes to dressing up, we've rounded up a few near-impossible-to-brick costume ideas to get those creative juices flowing. Worse comes to worst, just throw on some actual hard pants and go as yourself before the world shut down earlier this year. You're welcome.
Bill Murray from 'Caddyshack'
Lucky for you this costume does not come with a destructive dancing gopher.
Shop the look: Camo Wide Brim Hat ($11, amazon.com), 2-Pack Crewneck T-Shirts ($14, amazon.com)
Harry Styles
The Brit made a case for feather boas everywhere when he donned not one but three fits with the fluffy accessories at the 2021 Grammys. We're not one to pick favorites, but the shirtless leather suit and green boa combo is a real looker.
Shop the look: Faux Leather Jacket ($35, amazon.com), Faux Leather Pants ($30, amazon.com), Feather Boa ($11, amazon.com)
Joe Exotic
The kingliest of all costumes!
Shop the look: Men's Tiger King Button Down ($28, amazon.com), Mullet Wig ($14, amazon.com), Wrap Sunglasses ($39, glassesusa.com)
Rob from 'High Fidelity'
To be honest, you could pretty confidently go with almost any of the fits Kravitz rocks throughout the series, but a simple vintage tee tucked insouciantly into some faded denim is always a good look.
Shop the look: AC/DC Graphic Tee ($20, nordstrom.com), Levi's 501 Jeans ($42, amazon.com)
Ramy from 'Ramy'
The best thing about Ramy's relatable, millennial-friendly style is that you've probably got some version of each piece on display here at home. Grow out the beard a few weeks in advance, add a beanie, and then call it a day.
Shop the look: Carhartt Knit Cuffed Beanie ($17, amazon.com), Corduroy Rancher Jacket, ($194, huckberry.com)
A Reservoir Dog
All you need is a black suit. Seriously. But add a skinny black tie and a pair of sunglasses to really drive the whole look home.
Shop the look: P&L Men's Suit 2-Piece ($89, amazon.com); Skinny Necktie ($9, amazon.com), Les Specs 56mm Weekend Riot Sunglasses ($69, nordstrom.com)
Connell from 'Normal People'
C'mon. Did you really think Connell wasn't making the cut? Throw on a chain and a tracksuit, and then retreat to the corner of your apartment to reflect broodingly on all the past loves of your life.
Shop the look: Sport Soft-Shell Jacket ($54, everlane.com), Sport Jogger ($68, everlane.com), Silver Chain ($11, amazon.com)

'90s Dennis Rodman
Nobody does freaky, expressive, over-the-top tailoring like the Worm. (Warning: Expert-level swerve only.)

Shop the look: Rainbow Long Straight Wig ($34, amazon.com)
Brad Pitt from 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'
Do you own a pair of Levi's, a simple Champion tee, and a floral shirt? Good. You’re in. Recreating an enduring look from one of last year's biggest films is always a solid choice, plus, uh, it's Brad Pitt. But maybe stay away from LSD for the night. Y'know, for good measure.
Shop the look: Palm Hawaiian Shirt ($22, amazon.com), Champion White T-Shirt ($23, amazon.com)
Michael from 'The Good Place'
As luck would have it, dressing like the nicest demon in the world isn’t actually all that difficult. A patterned suit will automatically get you most of the way, but why stop there? A solid pair of glasses and some wacky socks (it’s okay on Halloween!) will help you unlock Good Place perfection.
Shop the look: Circular Eyeglasses ($13, amazon.com), Plaid Stretch Knit Sport Coat ($119, nordstrom.com), Three-Pack Stripe Polka-Dot Socks ($65, saksfifthavenue.com)
Freddie Mercury
White tank top. Faded denim. Studded armband. Throw on some combat boots and you're ready to go. Mercury’s Live Aid look is perhaps his most iconic, and it makes for a costume so simple you won't even feel like you're dressing up.
Shop the look: Faded Jeans ($98, nordstrom.com), Tagless Tank Multipack ($16, amazon.com), Studded Armband ($20, amazon.com)
Bradley Cooper in 'A Star is Born'
Sure, you could spend a few years training your vocal chords to flawlessly hit those gravelly lower octaves. Or you could just, like, throw on a trucker jacket, slick back your hair, and call it a day. Lady Gaga (sadly!) not included.
Shop the look: Trucker Jacket ($35, amazon.com), Dove Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace ($145, saksfifthavenue.com), Slim-Fit T-Shirt, ($10, amazon.com)
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Any and all heavy '90s vibes are always welcome in my book. Particularly welcome here? Colorful printed shirts and some half-done overalls. (Now more relevant than ever!)
Shop the look: Men's Overall ($40, amazon.com), Patchwork Button-Up Shirt ($69, nordstrom.com)
Steve Carell in 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'
Sure, this one takes a little bit of commitment. But if you're adamantly anti the whole costume thing, it's also a perennial crowd-pleaser that doesn't call for much in the way of actually dressing up. (A word to the wise: best not pursued alone.)
Shop the look: Performance Polo Shirt ($12, amazon.com), Lanyard with ID Holder, ($7, amazon.com), Slim-Fit Jeans ($67, saksfifthavenue.com)
Rocky Balboa
Got some gym shorts, boxing gloves, and six pack abs? Boy, have I got the costume for you.
Shop the look: American Flag Boxing Trunks ($40, amazon.com), Pro Style Training Gloves ($30, amazon.com)
The Dude
All you need to really embody the spirit of The Dude are a trusty pair of PJs and a thick, shawl-collar cardigan—though untamed drifter locks and a scraggly beard are welcome additions.
Shop the look: Zip-Up Cardigan ($33, amazon.com), Plaid Flannel Pajamas ($70, nordstrom.com)
Peak-Sleaze Justin Bieber
This one couldn't be easier. In fact, you're probably wearing a version of it right now. Throw on a pair of shades and some slippers and you're good to go. (Bonus points if you haven't washed your hair in months.)
Shop the look: Terry Cotton Cloth Slippers ($12, amazon.com), Wrap Around Sport Sunglasses ($15, amazon.com)
Jack Nicholson in 'Chinatown'
Just a hat, overcoat, and some white tape across your nose, and you’re basically J.J. Gittes himself.
Shop the look: Wool Fedora ($128, saksfifthavenue.com), Single Breasted Trench Coat, ($50, amazon.com), First Aid Tape ($3, amazon.com)
